In Hebrew Yerushalayim means, City of Peace. In Arabic it is called Al-Quds, meaning the Holy. The city is divided into three main parts. The Old City, East Jerusalem and the New City.
A small settlement existed here as far back as the 20th century BC, which was conquered by David and his Israelite army in 997 BC.
In 331 BC Alexander the Great conquered the city and the Romans gained control in 63 AD. Some 25 years later, they installed Herod the Great as King of Judea and the rest , as they say, is history.
40 years after the crucifixion of Jesus just outside the walls of the city, the Jewish revolt was defeated by the Romans and the history of the Jewish Diaspora began
Dispite its Hebrew name, Jerusalems place at the centre of the worlds three largest religions, has meant a chequered and bloody history. Even in these modern times Jerusalem is probably the foremost symbol of the Arab/ Israeli conflict. It is the divided and somewhat disputed capital of Israel, yet it remains one of the foremost visited Holy sites in the world.

As you mentioned Jerusalem is one of the most holy places. Thanks for building this info. This year our church members are planning to go to Jerusalem. Hope I visit Jerusalem soon.
