In Cornish Cornwall ( Kernow) translates as "Cornovii", meaning hill dwellers, and "Waelas", meaning strangers. You will see Kernow written in duality on the county signs as you enter. The Cornish are a proud and independant people. Proud of being "different" from the English and the Cornish nationalist movement (some prefer to call them self regionalists as opposed to nationalists) claim the right to their own Government, like the Scots and Welsh.
Cornwall is a Duchy under the Prince of Wales. It runs west from the River Tamar and is divided from England by the Tamar River.
The Celts settled the area about 1000BC and began mining valuable minerals; tin, iron, lead, zinc and even silver were found. In 55BC the Romans came, followed by the Saxons and then the Normans, who made Launceston the capital of the area. |
| | I moved to West Cornwall in December 2000. The main reasons for this were; 1) I like to live by the sea 2) I'd always heard Cornwall was the mildest part of Britain in terms of weather. 3) The novels of Winston Graham and Daphne DuMaurier which are set around this county.
Cornish was a language in its own right. With similarities to Breton and Welsh it pretty much died out in the 20th century, but is enjoying a revival these days. The last Cornish person to speak the language as their mother tongue lived in Mousehole, the next village round the Bay to mine. Her name was Dolly Pentreath and she is buried in a cemetary in a village at the back of the flats I live in. |
| | Cornwall has some of the best weather in Britain with beautiful long summers. The climate is so mild that even palm trees and cacti flourish well here. In the height of summer the Sun seems to do something to the sea and it becomes so clear that I am reminded of the Greek Islands. |

| Pros: | "the scenery; the summer weather; fantastic storms;" | | Cons: | "the damp; lack of regular public transport; few BIG towns to shop in ( good for visiting, not much fun to live with!)" |
