Driving through the Sonora Desert

We drove from San Diego to Guerrero Negro on Highway One. It is very stark terrain passing through the Sonora Desert to the Vizcaino Desert and Biosphere. It is a rather grueling 7 hour trip from the border so bring plenty of patience. There is no convenient air service to this part of Mexico. The closest place is La Paz or Loreto and you still have to drive 2-3 hours to Guerrero Negro...and AeroCalifornia routinely cancels flights at the last moment so driving is really the only logcial means.

It's a scenic, dusty journey across the Baja peninsula, passing through the very dry. desert-like landscape. There are isolated ranches supported by water from smaller palm oases, similar to the large fresh-water oasis in town.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:The only logical way to get to the whales
  • Cons:Rather boring stark 7 hour drive
  • In a nutshell:There is no other way to get to the wonderful whales in Guerrero Negro
