Tallinn – a charming medieval city

“Tallinn is always billed as “that charming medieval city,” and it certainly lives up to that reputation. But just take a good, long look at all those sparkling office towers, the busy people running around with wireless digital gadgets, the young people obsessing over the latest fashion trends and dressing better than you... This is not the Eastern Europe they talked about back home. Not by a long shot! It´s no wonder so many first-time visitors to Tallinn wander through the streets of Old Town, eyes bulging, jaws dropping, and exhibiting all the signs of stark-raving madness. Tallinn is a very old city. But its also a very new city – a city ready to carveout its niche in the 21st century Europe.” (Instant Guide to Tallinn, Inyourpocket, 2006)
I couldn´t express it better with my words than these lines of the instant-guide of Inyourpocket. Its exactly what I felt when I visited Tallinn. I didn´t expect such a modern boom town! A lot of construction work and renovation is going on. There are cars everywhere and of course plenty of tourist!

During my first two days I was more impressed by the masses of visitors than by the amazing sights. Even during the peak season in Prague or Budapest I have not seen such crowds like here!!! Unfortunately there were three cruise ships visiting the city at the same time and thousands of extra visitors were streaming through Old Town. Nevertheless I enjoyed Tallinn very much and I didn´t regret that I made the 2000 kms motorbike trip only to experience the "White Nights" and see “that charming medieval city”

Now these pages are even more interesting after i had the chance to experience this charming town. Thanks, you wrote very good tips. Maybe with one exception - I can not confirm that the Estonian drivers stop at zebra crossings, never generalize! :-)
