Boat to Chizumulu Island and other Likoma Island, Malawi Transportation Tips

Getting TO/AROUND: A few times a week there is a boat sailing between Likoma and Chizumulu. The place of departure can change so arrange your transport with the captain one or two days before you want to go. It can happen that he is doing some business in Mozambique and does not show up for a few days.

The captain is living in the village of "Ulisa" on the western side of Likoma. Usually it takes two or three hours to sail to Chizumulu but if there is no wind the crew will paddle the 11 kilometres to get you there and it can take some eight or more hours! Take enough water, food and sunprotection!
The trip I did in 1996 took us 9 hours and 1 US $ each.

Getting TO/AROUND: Sometimes, when guest of Kaya Mawa fly in and there is no pessenger who wants to fly back, its possible to catch a flight back to Lilongwe or Blantyre for only 50 $.

Getting TO/AROUND: Mbamba Village is the main centre of Likoma. On the shore there are Mozambiquean dhows trading with firewood, vegetables, maize, cassava etc. This is the place to arrange a trip to Cobue in Mozambique.
