Cairo - mother of all cities

by frockland - last update: Apr 21, 2006

Sultan Hassan Mosque
Street at Khan el Kalili Market
I arrived at length at Cairo, the mother of cities and seat of Pharaoh the tyrant, boundless in multitude of buildings, peerless in beauty and splendour, the meeting place of comer and goer, the halting - place of feeble and mighty, whose throngs surge as waves of the sea! (Ibn Battuta, traveller of the 14th century)

Cairo or Al-Quahira is a giant melting pot of Orient and Occident, east and west, old and modern. All the conquerors Romans, Turks, Mameluks, French and British left their landmarks here. The city is not a sedentary museum but very lively and changing place with a lot of noise, dust, crowded streets and poverty. The traffic is a nightmare and dangerous.
Rhamses Square
<The key to enjoying oneself in this absurd and exotic city lies in bringing an inexhaustible sense of humour and learning how to understand the range of Cairo smiles. They mean anything from I would like to help you and I expect nothing in return. to let me unburden you of your travellers checks! ... Learn to live with the city s rich squalor, its unforgiving sun and its constant cacophony, and Cairo might fulfill every post-colonial fantasy.>
(Lets go: Israel & Egypt, 5th edition 1991)

Be prepared of all this and enjoy a great city with everything it has to offer and that is plenty!

I try to give ´practical´ tips for low budget travellers. Also I try to put tips together in one mask and avoid to write about things that can be looked up in any travel guide that is describing things better that I could ever do.
