| | Saarema is the largest Estonian Island. Mainlanders say that the island is like “the old Estonia” . There was nearly no industry or immigration during the Soviet days, when the Island was closed for foreigners. Only since 15 years tourism is playing a more important role, although there had been a spa tradition since the middle of the 19th century, when Kuressaare had regular boat connections to Riga, Helsinki, Stockholm and Tallinn and there were the consulates of Germany, Holland, Sweden and Finland. |

| | Visitors can easily get the impression of an old-fashioned, agricultural island. There are many remains of the past like the famous windmills, the strongholds, castles and churches. The nature is beautiful and absolutely worth a visit. |
