Located in the middle of the country, squeezed into a plateau surrounded by volcanos and mountains, Mexico City is the biggest city in the world. With a population estimated between 25 and 30 milllion people it can be intimidating for the first time traveller. But with so much history, culture and things to do, Mexico City should not be skipped. |
| the meaning of the Mexican flag |
| | The founding of Mexico City - A history lesson The site of current Mexico City was actually founded by the Aztec civilization. They were looking for a location to build their empire. So they consulted Huitzilopochtli who was their god of creation, the sun and war. He replied in a vision that when the Aztecs see an eagle perched upon a cactus with a snake its mouth that this location would be the site of the empire. After many years of wandering the Aztecs finally came accross the vision....In the center of Lake Texcoco on a very small island. True to their god the Aztecs worked to drain the lake and built there city in the holy site. This explains the symbol in middle of the Mexican flag. Additionally the colors of the flag symbolize : Green - The independance movement, White - The purity of the Catholic faith and Red - The blood of national heros. |
I just got back from Mexico City and will be building a lot more to these pages. Keep checking back! | | |
