Salzburg in itself is great to visit, and what takes it over the top is its proximity to a variety of lakes. We went on a Sound of Music tour which took us to a couple of them.
I passed through Salzburg during their summer music festival and was able to catch a show. It was incredible. A violinist and pianist (husband and wife) played some fantastic music.
These are some of the houses we saw as we toured the lake district. Alpine villages seem to have this type of flavor.
- Pros:Music, Food, Recreation - What else is there?
- Cons:Mozart way over-commercialzed.

When we were there in 2003, we didn't actually go into Salzburg or take the Sound of Music Tour. Both would have been nice, but we ended up in the salt mines outside of town for a fun tour.
