Life in a small town Having lived in Coburg for about a year, I can recommend it as the ideal place for those who are tired of the big city and want to enjoy the cozy atmosphere of rural Germany, combined with enough restaurants, clubs and activities to keep you entertained. There are several good restaurants, plenty of pubs and taverns, and several days during the week the town square has food stalls and other market attractions. There are a couple of nightclubs in town that are decent for a small town. Larger dance clubs can be found in nearby Nurnburg and Bamberg, about an hour's drive away. There's a college campus in Coburg so there are plenty of young people aged about 18 - 23. The castle is the ancestral seat of the Sax-Coburg Royalty, related to the British Royal Family. It has a good weapons museum and a restaurant that offers a fun medieval feast at group rates. If you're here for a short time, visit the central area of town and the castle. For longer trips, use coburg as a base to visit some of the outlying hamlets and take the opportunity to meet the locals, who are friendly and can recommend other aspects of Coburg life for you to enjoy. If you stay near the center of town, everything, including the castle, is within walking distance. The castle is about a 25 minute, relaxed uphill stroll from town. Don't be afraid to try English, but knowing at least some basic Deutsch will be a big help while on the street or out and about. |
