The island belongs to the Winward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It is a french OverSeas « Departement - since 1946 and part of the European Union.
It is bordered to the East by the Atlantic Ocean and to the West by the Caribbean Sea. Its surface area is 1080 km², with 350 km of coastlines. Martinique is 75 km long and 35 km across.
The Northern part of the island consists of a large mountain range that includes Mount Pelé (1397m). It is covered by a dense tropical rain forest, with lush vegetation and numerous rivers running down the slopes of the mountains.
The Central part is the plain of Lamentin, located East of the bay of Fort-de-France. It used to be a swamp area, but man’s hand have transformed the mangrove into a dry ara where important industrial and trading activities are developping.
The Southern part has a very indented coastline with many coves (called « anses -) and beautiful beaches (white sand, coconut trees, clear waters). The countryside is particulary hilly (these hills are called « mornes -).
