The Two Towers

Petronas Twin Towers

Malaysia was the first ASEAN member country I travelled into outside of Singapore due to its proximity. I had been to Johor Bahru a few times but my first real weekend getaway to this country was that of an overnight 6 hour travel by coach going to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore. I was travelling with two of my housemates and first timers as we were, we had our fair share of some kind of a blooper. We left Singapore around 9pm and after 3 hours travel or so, we had our required stop-over for those who wanted to eat or use the bathroom or just stretch their legs. After half an hour we moved on and tried to get some sleep along the way anticipating our next stop would be in KL but barely after falling asleep, our coach stopped. We peeked around with our half-opened eyes and noticed everyone getting off and so did we. The surrounding was dimly lit with only a single street light glowing from a distance. I looked for the (previous) tallest building in the world but it was nowhere in sight. Confused, we started walking along the road when the coach driver’s companion called and talked to us in his very limited English. The moment we mentioned KL he asked us back inside the coach then head on to KL in a second with only three of us remaining. We burst into laughter from time to time throughout the rest of our journey realizing the mistake we just had. We arrived in Kuala Lumpur at the break of the dawn and although we were greeted with no skyscrapers at the bus station, we knew we were at the right place this time.
