Catedral de Girona - Girona

Catedral de Girona

Catedral de Santa Maria Catedral de Santa Maria Review

As most European cathedrals, it was built in different styles, during a long period of time (11th - 17th Century). There are still beautiful elements of the first Romanesque building (cloister and tower of Charlemagne).

The Gothic huge Nave has the widest arched span in the world. It was designed with three naves, but the prospect of a single nave caused suspension of the works on it, with an argument that lasted 50 years!

The main facade is Baroque, to reach it you must go up a large staircase from the late 17th century.

In the Treasury you can admire the "Tapis de la Creació" (Creation's Tapestry), a well preserved and beautiful medieval artwork.

The full Cultural Visit includes the Nave, the Treasury and the Cloister

Girona, somewhere in the Old Town - Girona

Girona, somewhere in the Old Town

keep your eyes open...

If there is a "thing to do" in Girona is wandering around. Wear a pair of comfy shoes on your feet and get lost. Climb the many stairs, go up and down the maze of the streets of the old town. But keep your eyes wide open, not only to see where you put your feet... there are so many details you'll find around. Enjoy

Address: Old town

Girona: Cases de l'Onyar at sunset - Girona

Girona: Cases de l'Onyar at sunset

Cases de l'Onyar

To reach the Old Town you should cross the bridges over the river Onyar. From there you'll see a line of houses whose rear facades are built facing the riverside. These were quite decrepit and in fact not a good area of the town, until 1983, when they were painted in bright colours and now transformed into one of the best-known views of the city.

Girona: views from the Walls - Girona

Girona: views from the Walls

Walk along the ramparts Walking Review

Wall Itinerary.

Spectacular stroll along the path that runs around the ancient walls dating from Charlemagne (9th century) to early medieval times (14th-15th centuries). It borders the historic centre, making it an ideal setting to enjoy spectacular views of the city. From the towers, now turned into privileged view points, you can enjoy spectacular vistas of Girona and surroundings.

The longest path can be accessed from the high part of the Barri Vell, the Jardins de la Francesa, or next to "Jardí d'Infància" (kindergarden), on the banks of the Onyar river.

The Sant Pere section has a fantastic viewpoint over the Passeig Arqueològic and the cathedral. It can be reached from the John Lennon's gardens .

Cloister of the Cathedral - Girona

Cloister of the Cathedral

Cloister of the Cathedral

The cloister is large, but it has an odd trapezoidal plan, because it is adjoined to the city walls. The capitals of the cloister show scenes from the Old and New Testaments.

The Treasury: There you can admire are works of great beauty and value. For instance, the high altar reredos made of silver, enamel and precious stones (one of the jewels of Spanish precious metalwork). The tapestry of the Creation is an important piece of Romanesque tapestry making. There is also a Beato de Liébana (beautiful medieval manuscript).
