La Isla Bonita

(The Pretty Island, yes, like Madonna's song!)

Caldera de Taburiente
La Isla Bonita (The Pretty Island... yes, like the old Madonna's song!): This way La Palma is known... as it is really a beautiful, magical island. Not too many tourists, and they are from the kind of tourist who like nature. In fact, nature is the main (and nearly only) interest of this island. It is a paradise for hiking, but even if you're not able to walk too much, you can enjoy it, as there are easy paths, and even you can reach many nice places by car. If you travel with family or are a small group, try to rent a whole house (there are very nice traditional houses, not expensive at all).

I do recommend going to see the astrophysical observatories at the top of the main volcano. This leads to another interest of this island: the sky. This is the only 'protected sky' of the North hemisphere, it mean there are restrictions of lighting intensity at night (do not be afraid, you will not even notice it, just the road and streets lights are yellow and with special 'caps'). The starring sky is incredible, specially if you have the chance to see it during new moon, it seems you can touch the stars!!!

Green tropical forests at the North (do not miss hiking at Los Tiles path, very easy but amazing). Volcanoes at the South, one of them still with zones of hot ground. There are not many beaches, as this is a mountain island, but there are some, and other places adapted to swim, as natural swimming pools in the coast.

Be aware that the weather is rainy and quite cold during winter, even it can snow at the central peaks.
