Santo Domingo Things to Do Tips by Belsaita

Many of the museums of Santo Domingo are located in the Plaza de la Cultura, a large park area where visitors can stroll easily from one museum to another. These include the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of History and Geography, and the National Museum of Natural History. There are as well the National Library, national Theatre....

In our short and atypical visit we only saw part of the Museum of Modern Art. We had the opportunity to attend the inauguration of the V Biennial of Caribbean Contemporary Art, really interesting, both as per some good art pieces on the exhibit, as people-watching event!! :-)

A pedestrian street, close to the Zona Colonial. Very well known shopping place; with lots of shops, restaurants, cafes, etc.

Even in its origins the area was not meant for tourists but for the locals, I'm afraid it's becoming more and more a tourist trap (I doubted on putting this tip on the "tourist traps" category). In any case, you may have some chances of getting some good deals, and it's a pleasant walk. Anyway, I would recommend you to walk a little further away to see the "really authentic" local streets.

You cannot leave Santo Domingo without wandering around the old town, Zona Colonial. Apart from the Cathedral (the oldest in America), the house of Colon.... etc. you have many nice places to stop to have a drink or dinner (see my other tip about "Palacio de la Esquizofrenia"). We were not much impressed by the architecture (as we Spaniards do have seen many similar "old towns" in our contry, for instance in Andalusia or Canaries) but we should reckon it's a nice and interesting area!
