Nightlife Spot: WOMAD (World Of Music, Arts And Dance)
Ex-punk drummer Thomas Brooman set up the first festival of world music back in the 1980s, in a field in Somerset. It was a financial disaster. Enter former Genesis singer Peter Gabriel, who was so committed to the project that he gave a benefit gig to bail it out. There were rough times ahead and Gabriel came to the rescue more than once, but now WOMAD is not only a financial success but the greatest festival of its kind in the world. It has its permamnent home now beside the Thames in Reading.
There are many other WOMADs all around the world now, but this is the original and no doubt the best!
