Bet for fun, not for profit!
Betting on the races gives you an interest in and an edge to the action. But don't expect to get rich, you won't.
A very few professional gamblers make a living out of betting on horse racing. Generally they do it by being well in the know and staking very large sums at very short odds on near certainties in obscure races at unfashionable courses to rake in a comparatively small profit.
You almost certainly don't know as much as the bookmakers know. As with all commercial gambling, the odds are stacked in favour of the house. The fun is in spotting the bargain - the horse that you think has a better chance than the bookies' odds would indicate.
Follow these two sensible rules at least.
Don't bet more than you can afford. Assume that your bets will lose. Decide how much you are prepared to lose if all your fancies fail, divide that amount amongst the races, and don't stake any more. Any winnings are a bonus - hang on to them!
Never, ever, chase your losses. The road to ruin is littered with the corpses of those who lost at gambling, and gambled on in the vain hope of getting their money back. Shrug off your losses, there's always another day.
