Stirling - a place to stir the blood

Scots wha' hae wi' Wallace bleid

The Wallace Monument
Today Stirling is an attractive market and university town right in the heart of Scotland. Its situation is beautiful, with its dramatic castle on a crag overlooking the winding River Forth. It lies at the foot of the Ochil Hills, right on the line dividing Highlands from Lowlands, and it's overlooked not only by the castle but by Dumyat, a hill that changes its colour and mood with the light, and with the startling monument to William Wallace, leader of the 1312 rebellion against Edward I of England.

Now, where's Mel Gibson...

The pictures on this page were taken in 1986 while I was attending an Open University summer school at the University. I had little contact with the town itself.

Thanks for reminding me of Bridge of Allan. My cousin lived there for a while, but I'd forgotten it existed....
