My parents quite by accident one year in the early 1970's discovered the Manistee National Forest campground while I was still a very young kid. In this most pristine campground we found several loops to camp in, each with a distinctive tree name to it and an atmosphere of the utmost in cleanliness. It became a yearly event for my family and we learned to appreciate the first two loops to go camping in were we to be lucky enough to have reservations for such. The water always was just the right temperature in the lake and if we were tired of the 'camp and go' food we had packed with us, there was always the delicious Elias Brothers Big Boy we could go to for pretty much anything we desired. This home base of ours in the campground lended us the chance and grand opportunity of visiting Mackinac Island and each member of my family atypically rode a bike at least twice around the island before we would embark on one of the ships back to the mainland. Back at the campground, we always had no trouble making friends with any and most of the other travelers also camping there around us. Staying in a hotel room never was an option we would consider as we stayed in the Manistee area. The National Park had way too much to offer, and, besides, being in the park was the utmost in fun!
One year we even rented a plane to take a ride over the surrounding area and all of us could not have been more excited than we were when doing so! And then came the summer of 1977 ... ... ...
STAR WARS had hit the theatres several months before when we arrived at our favorite campground and there was one radio station playing every night the almost half hour long tribute to STAR WARS in the form of music from a group known as MECO. It was heaven for me, being the more than avid sci-fi fan like I was, and even after looking at all of this, there still was more!
Take for instance the quiet and asture schoolgrounds of West Shore Community College. Who could ask for more? And, if memory serves me correctly, my family attended some sort of a show at said college put on by students from there. It was, of course, very good!
Need more to know about this best of the best camp-grounds and communities? Visit there yourself! You will for sure not be disappointed! |
