Maldives - Dhigufinolhu Resort

The ultimate beach holiday

UPDATE: The Dhigufinolhu Resort was one of the resorts quite badly affected by the tsunami of Dec 2004. As far as I can tell they're not yet back in operation. I hope they're up and running soon, because it was really a gorgeous place...

-------------------------------------

Had my first taste of the Maldives in August 2002 - not exactly the best season to go, but we were very fortunate in that the week that we were there saw nothing but sunshine (the week after and the week before we rainy apparently).

Can't say lots of the Maldives in general, because you're just stuck on one island resort.

The Dhigofinolhu is mid-range I think - not too posh and not too shabby. It is also connected to two other resort islands which makes the week-long stay less claustrophobic.

I am not a very active or sporty person, but my husband persuaded me to go snorkelling, which was the best thing I did there. I can't swim... so had to use the lifejacket... and managed to paddle my way around even in depths of 30 metres. You can't sink! Dhigofinolhu doesn't have any corals so there weren't very many fish near the main island (however there were still the occasional baby sharks swimming between your legs!), but there was an artificial island called Alcatraz abt 5 mins away by boat, with a reef and therefore fish.

All in all, I would recommend the Maldives but make sure you do some research the specific resort you are going to. They are TINY islands, so you want to make sure you can "get along" with kind of crowd the resort attracts - the drinking crowd, the diving crowd, the beach bums, the 3 massages a day + manicure crowd, etc.

Please also have a look at my Photo Album on the Maldives.
Sunsets like these every single evening...
Another perfect day...

Judging from media coverage, the tsunami damage on the Maldives must have been severe. Hope they are recovering.
