Udine is a quiet town in the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Walking around the town centre, you might well think that you're in a germanic city... except for everyone speaking Italian of course. Many locals also speak Friulian which is recognised as a language and not a dialect (you will notice names of villages in Italian and Friulian as you drive through the country side).
The Venetian influence is also very strong in Udine, as seen in the architecture. As mentioned, this is a fairly quiet town with hardly any of the big city trappings. Friulians are also reputed to be huge drinkers.... and you do often come across farming types popping into bars for a quick glass of wine or the local grappa! |
