Luxor Temple is in the heart of Luxor and seemed to be the most perfect example of a temple that we saw in Egypt. Near the entrance there is an amazing avenue of sphinxes which used to connect the temples of Luxor and Karnak. The pylon and obelisk shown in picture are so much bigger then they look here. The Romans also added to the temple and if you look carefully near the back of the temple you can still see some Roman frescoes.

If so, then visit the Mummification Museum. It tells you all about the mummification process and there are plenty of mummified animals to look at and a mummified Pharoah (I can't remember which one). If you go here before visiting the Valley of the Kings you may understand better what you see in the tombs.
On display also are the tools used in the mummification process, including a small hammer which is used to break the bone in the nose. This is done so that another small implement can be poked up into the scull to drag out the brains! It is a good idea to visit this museum before lunch!

The Corniche is the main road that runs along the front of Luxor next to the Nile, it passes most of the major hotels and Luxor temple - seen here. You'll find plenty of Egyptians taking an evening stroll so it's great for people watching.

Directions: Luxor front

Each carved from a single piece of stone the Colossi are 18m high and are virtually all that remains of a once great temple. They depict Amenhotep III and they once stood at the entrance to the temple as Ramses II stands before the first pylon at Luxor temple. The temple was on low ground and hence it has been destroyed by the Nile floods.
You will come across these colossi on route from Luxor to the Valley of the Kings.

Almost all visitors to Luxor visit the Valley of the Kings on the opposite side of the Nile. It is well worth the trip to see the beautifully decorated tombs.
You have to pay to use your camera in the tombs and even then, you aren't allowed to use the flash so the only picture we took in the valley was this one. I believe that it is possible to take a video camera but the charge for using it is quite extortionate - about £10 I think.
