Charleroi is one of the major cities of Belgium and is called the capital of the Black Country ( because of its coal industry). Besides that it is often compared to Chicago, regarding crime, which is really exaggerated if you ask me!
Now, does this sound like a tourist destination? Not really. And if you're only on a brief stay in Belgium, I suggest you go and see Bruges, Ghent, Brussels, ... rather than Charleroi.
But somehow Charleroi has 'something'. Walking through the streets, smelling the coal, I tried to capture the spirit of this industrial city.
If you're flying to Belgium with Ryanair, you'll land about 5 km away from Charleroi, in Gosselies. If you have some time to kill, than why not give Charleroi a try? It has some nice pubs to spend a great evening! |

Can you recommend a way to get from Charleroi at 11 p.m. (2300) to the Villa Royale hotel in Brussels center that is safe for a woman travelling alone? Also cost is an issue . . .thank you |
