Casa Paco: The best steak I've EVER had!

Restaurant Name: Casa Paco
We ate here twice, the food was so good! Frequented by the famous (matadors and others) and not so famous (me!). Casa Paco has been around since 1933, serving their world famous steaks. In my opinion, Ruths Chris doesn't stand a chance if Casa Paco were in their neighborhood! The steaks are ordered by weight and served on plates so hot, if you want the steak cooked more, simply cut off a piece and press it to the plate. No joke! RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST! And don't plan on dining early...it's the Spanish way of life to eat late.
Favorite Dish: The filet mignon was delicious. I also loved the roasted red pepper "salad". And let the waiter suggest a wine for you...the one recommended was outstanding!

La Negra Tomasa: Cuban food in Spain?!

Restaurant Name: La Negra Tomasa
It was my first time eating Cuban food. Thanks to La Negra Tomasa, I will eat it again. The waitresses, who are dressed in traditional garb, were very welcoming the minute I walked in. I understand that the place is hopping with live salsa music until 5:30 a.m. Unfortunately I was only there for lunch (sigh!).
Favorite Dish: I ordered a dish with tamale, black beans, rice and beef (possibly some Spanish influence going on in the cooking?). Good food for a hungry girl. Not too keen on the rice pudding...maybe you want to skip dessert. The adult beverages were great though!

La Barraca: Known for it's Paella

Restaurant Name: La Barraca
Established in 1935 with an unassuming front, this restaraunt is known for it's 10 different types of paella and wonderful service. The wait staff was at our service without being overattentive. Once again, reservations are a MUST. And don't forget to order wine, they've got the good stuff!
Favorite Dish: The paella of course! I only found two places in Spain where I truly enjoyed the paella...La Barraca was one of them.

Restaurant Name: Museo del Jamon
Where can you get two ham and cheese sandwiches, potato tortilla (similar to a potato quiche), cerveza and two cafe con leches for $8.20 Euro?! And the food tastes good! Note: If you're a vegetarian, this might not be the best place for you to eat!
Favorite Dish: Jamon mixto on croissant.

Botin: One of Hemingway's Favorites

Tip Rating: Satisfaction:

|
Restaurant Name: Casa Botin
RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST!!! Known for it's roasted suckling pig and lamb, Casa Botin is also acknowledged by the Guinness Book of Records as being the earliest restaurant, opened in 1725. For you literary buffs, this famous dining spot was a haunt of Hemingway's and Goya supposedly worked here before becoming a painter. "Tuna's", similar to mariachis, serenaded us all and were very impressive. Traditional music with great senses of humor.
Favorite Dish: The filet mignon. The roast suckling pig seemed to me nothing but skin, fat and minimal meat. I would not order it again. Dessert was wonderful...and where can you buy a glass of nice port for $2.85 Euro? Here!

CAYOBLUES Wed May 7, 2008 02:34 UTC I no doubt believe Botin is a magnificent establishment....but the oldest? I was in a resturant just outside of Munich near Augsburg, ran by the Hasen Brewery that was opened in the late 1400s!!! The ceiling was less than seven feet! (around two metres) | mvtouring Wed Feb 7, 2007 10:34 UTC Lovely restaurant tips ;-) | sourbugger Wed Nov 30, 2005 18:28 UTC i had forgotten quite how good food is in madrid | scottishvisitor Thu Nov 17, 2005 17:06 UTC Nice alternative look at Madrid - I wouldn't like the suckling pig dish either |
