Las Fallas is amazing! Just one of many festivals which occur throughout Spain. Over 2 million people arrive in the city to be a part of this party.
The creation you see in the picture is made of wood, wax and paper mache. These works usually represent figures or events occuring at present. Some are satirical, some cute...some I didn't understand at all! Many take a year to complete. I was amazed at the detail of these pieces and couldn't believe that all but one would come to a fiery end.
The very last night of Las Fallas, towering infernos erupt all over the city as the creations are burned to the ground. Only one piece is saved, having been judged the best creation.
Each year, more and more people attend Las Fallas. I strongly recommend obtaining lodging WELL in advance or you may be out of luck!
And don't be surprised at the firecrackers exploding at all hours of the day and night...this is customary within the week of Las Fallas.
Ah yes! Be sure to go to the main Plaza Ayntamiento for the daily mascleta, which takes place 2pm. There you will see fireworks explosions, rockets and firecrackers. Ear plugs recommended! |
