The cities of Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms are the primary entry points into the busiest and most interesting parts of the park. Check out our pages for these cities to find more information regarding food, souvenirs and a place to stay if you aren't camping.

The largest neighboring communities where services can be found is Yucca Valley, which lies just west of Joshua Tree on Highway 62.

For some reason I started heading out to the Mojave,
early morning drives out of the city
to the end of the road.

It’s a place you can go along for a long while
and nothing seems to be happening.
And then, all of a sudden,
it can just take on this sort of…I mean,
it’s hard to explain,
but it takes on an almost magical quality.
It just suddenly stands up and hums,
it becomes so beautiful, incredibly,
the presence is so strong.
Then twenty minutes later,
it will simply stop.
