"Pohnpei, Micronesia" State of Pohnpei by kenmerk

State of Pohnpei Travel Guide: 42 reviews and 72 photos

Of the pacific islands that I have visited, Pohnpei is my favourite. While they do have some tourism industry, it is quite low key. Just a couple small hotels and restaurants and a few dive operators on the island. (No massive Tumon bay type developments, thank God...)

I am fortunate as I have a friend who lives here, and has the full dive setup, so it make diving here a breeze. Also, since he has many local friends in the area, it also provides for easy access to the local culture.

And as such I have been able to go to more than one native pig roast party and Sakau swilling sessions. (Sakau is the local semi-narcotic concoction that will make your feet fail to operate properly, and your face go numb....)

The diving in Pohnpei is just outstanding, and it is such a joy not to be on one of those cattle drive dives that you see in Guam or Hawaii... I have done about 25 dives here, and only once did we encounter any other divers underwater.

The amount of marine life you will encounter is incredible: Giant mantas, Reef sharks, Barracuda, as well as all the micro critters on the reef...

If you want a dive vacation far from the maddening crowds, I couldn't recommend this place more...

Yummy-looking roast piggy, local liquor and good dive waters..Ken , you're really living the life, man! Bet the piggy taste heavenly. Btw, what's the max depth around here? Do you have to do any tech diving for those WWII antiques?

A tank o' O2 and a can o' Heineken is all you need to battle the territorial Clown Fish, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.......
