State of Pohnpei Travel Guide: 42 reviews and 72 photos
Of the pacific islands that I have visited, Pohnpei is my favourite. While they do have some tourism industry, it is quite low key. Just a couple small hotels and restaurants and a few dive operators on the island. (No massive Tumon bay type developments, thank God...)
I am fortunate as I have a friend who lives here, and has the full dive setup, so it make diving here a breeze. Also, since he has many local friends in the area, it also provides for easy access to the local culture.
And as such I have been able to go to more than one native pig roast party and Sakau swilling sessions. (Sakau is the local semi-narcotic concoction that will make your feet fail to operate properly, and your face go numb....)
The diving in Pohnpei is just outstanding, and it is such a joy not to be on one of those cattle drive dives that you see in Guam or Hawaii... I have done about 25 dives here, and only once did we encounter any other divers underwater.
The amount of marine life you will encounter is incredible: Giant mantas, Reef sharks, Barracuda, as well as all the micro critters on the reef...
If you want a dive vacation far from the maddening crowds, I couldn't recommend this place more...

I've just finished the Oliver Sacks book "The Island of the Colorblind" about his journey to Pohnpei and with pleasure I found your tips and impressions from this far areas. Great page!
After Tahiti, I'm beginning to explore the sea... heading Guam & Okinawa next, hopefully thereafter this place. Sounds interesting though not the rain!
Another information-packed page Ken! And this time, not only underwater. And as usual, nice pics!
Yummy-looking roast piggy, local liquor and good dive waters..Ken , you're really living the life, man! Bet the piggy taste heavenly. Btw, what's the max depth around here? Do you have to do any tech diving for those WWII antiques?
Hahhaha You don't want to drink that stuff before a dive you might not be able to hold the mouth piece in your mouth tight!! hahaha
No pictures of the war ships?...
Nice underwater pictures. Good stuffs. Nice picture of the girl on the swing too. You have indeed dived a lot a lot. I am envious. Cheers!
A tank o' O2 and a can o' Heineken is all you need to battle the territorial Clown Fish, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.......
Wow like your underwater pix!!! The shark is nice, but the tuna sure doesn't look like a tuna :)
What a place, no wonder it's you favorite :) Didn't quite enjoy seeing the pig though :P
