Rotorua, of the rotten egg smell fame... Probably the most active of the geothermal areas in New Zealand (definately the most frequented...)
Though a bit too touristy, and some of the geothermal areas are overpriced, there are a few thing definately worth seeing here...
My favourites include the multi-coloured Champagne Pool "hot lake", the Lady Knox Geyser, and Kerosene Creek for that hot soak under a small hot waterfall... (nature' very own Jacuzzi...)

Just like Hungary. we also have a lot of smelly thermal waters all around the country. Even if we don`t have these lovely geyseers. You`re right who cares about stink if you can see a real natural wonder?
They aren't tar pits.
Great photos and descriptions Ken! It makes me want to go and soak in some of that gurgling mud myself! This is an area that I had not heard much about before.
These pictures are amazing Ken! I can actually hear the lake going a-glup-glup-glup as you walked up the trail.......and a CHAMPAGNE lake too?! Paradise!
