"COASTAL GLORY" Manzanita by mtncorg

Manzanita Travel Guide: 13 reviews and 41 photos

Manzanita is a grand example of locations along the northern Oregon coast available to Portlanders as a second home. The beach is wide and gently sloping. Neahkanie Mountain serves as a magnificent backdrop to the north. The town is a quiet place with a couple of small restaurants and shops, most of your vacation is centered on your rental home. Manzanita is supposedly the area where Sir Francis Drake buried Spanish treasures plundered long ago, but the real treasures you will see include glorious sunsets over the Pacific and far-reaching vistas from US 101 on, or better yet, hike atop, Neahkanie Mountain. You can walk the beaches, one long beach from Neahkanie Mountain to the entrance of Nehalem Bay, 4-5 miles, or walk the trails up and over Neahkanie Mountain into Oswald West State Park, Short Sand Beach, Cape Falcon and beyond. From up high, you can see whales and sea lions cavorting in the surf. From below, you can view the multicolored life amidst the tide pools among the rocks. Short Sand Beach is probably the most popular surfing beach in the State, predictable surf, enclosed bay and a cheap walk-in campground. Remember your heavy wet suit and hood, otherwise, can you say 'ice cream headache'?

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Beach, forests, bay, tide pools, surf
  • Cons:Best bet is to rent a beach house, requiring a little local knowledge
  • In a nutshell:This is a PRIME example of Coast Vacation - Oregon-style

Now that we've been to Oswald West and Manzanita I finally *get* Oregon beaches. They are as spectacular as you make them sound and moreso. You got any openings for next Christmas? ;-)

Please don't put food pics in. My salivation makes the keys on my keyboard sticky. Great pages.

Wow, a week long feast! But how do you differentiate the poison ones from the edible ones? I trust there was plenty of wine on hand.

Thank you for "luring" me to this magnificent place. One of Greek's goddesses was born out of the sea foam.
