Kings Valley is a quiet rural valley along the upper Luckiamute River set apart from the main part of the Willamette Valley by a series of hills in which is located the McDonald Forest of Oregon State University. Here, in 1846, the King family settled after a long and harrowing journey the year before from Missouri in which they had taken a “short cut” through the mountains of central Oregon on their way to The Dalles. Other families would eventually join the Kings and the even the US Army came establishing Fort Hoskins at the south end of the valley in 1856. Today the valley is very quiet except for a few homes centered around a store on OR 223. To drive this highway south from Dallas is to take a route less travelled with Marys Peak looming to the south.
