A thousand acre park preserves the canyon known as ‘Seh-ga-hun-da’ or the ‘Valley of the Three Falls’. The Genesee river has formed a gorge with rock walls rising over 550 feet/170 m in some places with three major waterfalls contained within - Upper, Middle and Lower - along with a host of other smaller falls that come off of tributaries flowing into the gorge - best known is Inspiration Falls, which drops 350 feet/107 m. It is possible to walk the east rim - part of the Finger Lake Trail system - or drive the west rim. The northern part of the park is a reservoir. Most of the visitor amenities are found in the southern part of the park - a museum, the Glen Iris Inn, campgrounds - which is the main part of Portage Gorge and its waterfalls. Fall is probably the most spectacular time to visit with the color change adding to the drama, though winter could offer a lot, as well. Come and see why the canyon is known as the “Grand Canyon of the East”.
