"GLACIER-WATERTON - ROCKIES PRESERVED" Glacier National Park by mtncorg

Glacier National Park Travel Guide: 391 reviews and 836 photos

Wilderness adventure is guaranteed in these Park’s which manage to preserve a section of the Rocky Mountains on the border of the US and Canada. There are over 730 miles of trails in Glacier - you need backcountry permits for camping sites; obtain at one of the ranger stations before heading out. Most people are content to drive across Logan pass on the spectacular Going-to-the-Sun Road, maybe getting out at the pass and wandering around the alpine gardens there. Some will venture up to the Many Glacier area where several spectacular day hiking possibilities exist - ie towards Grinnell Glacier. Others will enjoy the lakes - St Mary on the east side of Logan Pass and Lake Macdonald on the west. Then to the north, the fjord like Waterton Lake extends into the northern wilds. In addition to the backcountry campsites, there are a couple of backcountry chalets - Granite Park and Sperry which are available with meals. Reservations at these huts are recommended far in advance - see the National Park website for more information on these.

Glacier Park - and Waterton - are quite beautiful parks and if you are a mountain enthusiast, they should be on your list of places to see at some point. If you put them on the same trip as a jaunt into the Canadian Rockies, I recommend seeing this area first. That way the build up is better, for the mountains to the north represent another notch up the scale.

Great photos here on the mountains and views of Glacier National Park. The Highland Trail sounds interesting, now I wish I had not missed out on it!
