Incorporated in 2001, Vedic City’s 99 inhabitants voted to change the town name to Mahrishi Vedic City in late 2003. About four miles northwest of Fairfield, Iowa, the town was established through the efforts of followers of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation movement. The Maharishi first came to Iowa in 1974 when he moved his Maharishi University of Management from its Santa Barbara, California campus to the Fairfield campus of the failed Presbyterian Parsons College.
Maharishi Vedic City is set up according to Maharishi Sthapatya Vedic design – roads tend to be circular with houses only on the westside of the streets in order for their entrances to face to the east. The style is properly be attuned to promote health, happiness and harmony. The town is in a state of construction. Homes look pretty with their east-orientation and their golden roof ornaments – the kalash. Two large hotels are here – the Raj, offers an ayurvedic health retreat from which you can venture forth, pondering on which lot will be your future homesite. The city offers tours on Fridays and Sundays for $30 including a vegetarian lunch at the Raj. |

deecat Tue Jan 9, 2007 19:51 UTC Another stellar page and well worth visiting. | karenincalifornia Fri Dec 10, 2004 22:17 UTC I always learn so much when I visit your pages, Mark. This time I learned I most defintely don't have a Vedic house - (entry faces south, kitchen faces north). It sounds like you had quite an interesting trip to the midwest. | Stephen-KarenConn Wed Oct 20, 2004 12:56 UTC Fairfield was already high on my list of places to see. You make me want to visit even more. Outstanding detail and research has gone into these pages. | Jonathan_C Sun Oct 17, 2004 14:35 UTC I must say that transcendental meditation sounds more appealing than the religious practices of your other Utopian communities. We'll see if Vedic City outlives the Maharishi. |
