Heading north out of Bishop on US 6, you proceed under the vast ramparts of the White Mountain range towering 10000 feet above you. Here, I concentrate on the sights found beyond the public end of the White Mountain road - the University of California at Berkeley's High Altitude Barcroft Center and California's third highest peak, White Mountain Peak, 14246 feet high. Chalfant itself is a local town along US 6 named for a local newspaperman from Bishop. The view of White Mountain Peak from here is spectacular.
