| Unfurling the flag on White Mt Pk 14246 feet high |
Heading north out of Bishop on US 6, you proceed under the vast ramparts of the White Mountain range towering 10000 feet above you. Many of my tips for the White Mountains can be found on my Big Pine pages for Big Pine is the automobile access for the Whites. Here, I concentrate on the sights found beyond the public end of the White Mountain road - the University of California at Berkeley's High Altitude Barcroft Center and California's third highest peak, White Mountain Peak, 14246 feet high. Chalfant itself is a local town along US 6 named for a local newspaperman from Bishop. The view of White Mountain Peak from here is spectacular. |
