Rooms with a View
Nearby was Castle A which had 45 rooms in six stories, but this ruin has deteriorated over time. Sinaguans were thought to have been influeced by the Anasazis to the north in the pueblo-construction techniques. They are not thought to be masters in the art of building as the Anasazi were, but the local rock they worked with here was soft and split poorly. Still, Montezuma Castle is thought of as one of the best preserved native structures in the Southwest.

The Castle, of Sinaguan construct, sits up 100 ft
Early European settlers were impressed by these cliff dwellings and with their lack of knowledge of pre-Columbian American history, deduced that Montezuma and his Aztecs had a role in their development. This, of course, was not the case, but the name is colorful.
The dwelling is a 12th century 20 room affair set in the cliffs 100 feet above the valley.

Sinaguan house built into rock walls at the Well
There is a Hohokam pithouse exhibit from about 110. The Sinaguan had several dwellings here with about 150-200 people in residence, both above the Well and in the cliff faces from 1125 to 1400.

Montezuma Well - dwellings in cliff on other side
Both Hohokam and Sinaguans used the waters from this wel to irrigate their crops. The well is in a huge limestone sinkhole and springs constantly feed the lake bringing in a splash of green to the arid desert around.
The Well is about 4 miles northeast of the Castle.
