This is the heart of Ljubljana. Ground Zero. You know that because of the little motorized tourist train which starts from here. A very popular cafe sits across from the Presernov statue, though just as many people while away their time sitting on the base of the statue and the stairsteps to the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. The Triple Bridge crosses the Ljubljanica River here giving a grand view to the cast high on the hill above. Presernov was one of the first Slovenes to write in the Slovene language, thus serving as a starting point for a future country of Slovenia. You can find him on the 1000 tolar note as well, at least until 2007, when the euro becomes the money of this realm, as well. What will all of the Slovenes do with those small tolar coins, or the 10,20,50 tolar paper notes? 100 tolars = about 50 cents.

Joze Plecnik added two pedestrian bridges o the main vehicular span over the Ljubljanica next to the Presernov Trg. Plecnik wanted to create something unique for Ljubljana and he succeeded. He also redesigned the banks along the river and the graceful colonnades of the Central Market just downstream from Presernov Trg. Sitting on the steps of the Church of the Annunciation on the square, the Triple Bridge ties in the main square to the castle above.

Another contribution of Joze Plecnik, forming a very graceful wall along the river, the cathedral of St Nicholas and the castle rising above. Behind the colonnades lies a large open-air maket.

Modelled after a roman fountain, the gushing urns represent the rivers of the old Austrian province of Carinola - Sava, Krka and Ljubljanica. The fountain - 1741- sits in the middle of Mestni trg in front of the Town Hall/Magistrat (late 15th century).

On a summer night, Ljubljana is on parade here, walking up one side of the river and down the other. The banks were redesigned by Joze Plecnik. Cafes line the banks with promenades. Small boats and ducks course on top of the river.

The flanks of Castle Hill are enforested making walks here a pleasant respite from the hubris below. The castle dates from the 16th century. From the hill, you can look out over the city towards the Kaminsko-Savinske Alpe mountains one hour away.
