This is a nice little city to stop in. Of the three former Yugoslav republic capitals that I have been to (Zagreb and Sarajevo being the other two), it is definitely the smallest and most Austrian in its core. Of course, that is due to the fact that Slovenia was ruled by the Hapsburgs for centuries. The central touristic heart of the city extends aobut a kilometer along the banks of the little Ljubljanica River. Along the right bank, the houses of the Old Town are crowded beneath the castle hill. Presernov Trg (Square) is the epicenter for the city, next to the beautiful 17th century Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and with the Triple Bridge going across the river. Numerous cafes, so vital to the city health of European cities, line the walks along the river, but really take heart in the Mestni Trg and Stari Trg - Trg does means 'square' but in these cases, these are pedestrian streets filled with one cafe after another.

Ljubljana is a nice start for the tourist to Slovenia. But it is just the start.
