Maryland was a Border State at the time of the American Civil War, a category it barely fits into nowadays. Geography has stamped diversity into this small State's history and culture. Western Maryland seems more like an extension of Virginia's Tidewater while Pennsylvania slides seamless into the West and Center. The central core of the State is dominated by the Baltimore-Washington metroplex. My tips for Maryland are centered further west in what is locally known as the Maryland Triangle - made up of Washington and Frederick Counties (there will be a slight digression into Montgomery County, as well. South and Catoctin Mountains represent northern extensions of the Blue Ridge, forming the backbone for the triangle and provide a magnificent autumnal display of color.
