I have stayed here three times and each has been great. The public spaces show what is missing in newer 'modern' hotels.
Unique Qualities: The Winedumah has a longer history than most of the lodgings in this region. It has been transformed into a large bed and breakfast and makes a more pleasant alternative to the gaggle of motels found in nearby Lone pine. The lobby is large and inviting - good thing since the rooms tend to be small. Chairs invite you to sit along the front veranda and watch the traffic ramble by on US 395. As with the Dow Villa Motel in Lone Pine, many a movie company has called the Winedumah 'home' during production in nearby locations. The name comes from an 80 foot granite spire you can spy to the east of town along a low spot on the Inyo Mountain crest. It was formed when a Shoshone brave shot an arrow from the crest of the Sierra at a pair of Paiute brothers standing atop the Inyos during a battle. One of the Paiutes was killed and the other turned to stone by the Shoshone who gave the command, 'Winnedumah' = 'Stay right wehre you are!' The stone Paiute has since stayed right there, forever looking out over his people in the Owens Valley below.

amandajayne81 Sat Mar 14, 2009 07:36 UTC Interesting page. Lots of great tips and photos. | chewy3326 Sat Sep 2, 2006 03:22 UTC Wonderful page on California's highlights; sadly I've been there three times but have yet to see (or climb) Mt. Whitney. Interesting flash flood tip on Death Valley. | Nemorino Sun May 7, 2006 15:40 UTC Fine photos and descriptions, as always. I lived in Berkeley from 1966 to 1970, but didn't see nearly as much of the state as you have seen. By the way, have you seen JLBG's flash flood tip? http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/15ecc9/ | madamx Tue Jun 28, 2005 16:51 UTC Beautiful pictures, just right for California dreamin'. Heading to San Francisco in Aug. :o) ~ Helen |
