"EL VALLE DE ANTON - RETREAT FOR PANAMA CITY" El Valle by mtncorg

El Valle Travel Guide: 21 reviews and 49 photos

El Valle occupies the floor of a collapsed volcano. After the volcano’s collapse, a lake was formed which caused fertile soils to accumulate on the lake bed. Over time, the lake naturally breached the sidewalls and drained. Indians moved into the area to take advantage of the rich soils. El Valle is a quiet town that comes alive on Sundays when there is a weekly - Sunday - marketplace that takes place which features handicrafts from all over. The 28 km road leading up and into the crater was only paved in 1997 and big changes have occurred in the valley since then - and will probably continue, as well.

At over 3000 feet high, El Valle is cooler than Panama City - wetter too. Besides the handicraft market, there are several other things which can occupy your time - ride horses, hike - one trail goes atop the old crater walls and if it is a clear day, you can see both the Pacific and the Caribbean - learn more about the local Indian culture which predates Columbus, you can try to find the elusive and rare golden frogs or ride the cable ziplines through the trees at the Canopy Adventures.
