Where to eat in BsAs? Where to begin? It is a journey of self-discovery, but I will let you in on a neighborhood secret. Just off Avenida Colon on Miguel Quintana, is a small local restaurant called Las Delicias. The several times I ate there – outstanding pepper steak, lomo de pimienta – there were no other tourist to be seen, just locals who were greeted by staff as family members. In a city like BsAs, there are many such restaurants to be discovered.

    Favorite Dish: Lomo de pimeienta!

La Biela Cafe: The World on Parade!

On the east edge of the park on the east side of La Recoleta – end of Miguel Quintana – is a BsAs institution, La Biela. This is the place to be seen. La Biela has a long history with its present name – the Crankshaft, in English – a result of an earlier popularity with the motoring class. Outside service is slightly more expensive than inside. Don’t be surprised if you run into Robert Duvall here as he makes his late night rounds with his Argentine wife.

There are many other establishments extending southwards from La Biela, including a nice brewpub – Bullers – that provides brews with a bit more punch than the ubiquitous Quilmes.

Favorite Dish: Un cortado, por favor.

QUILMES CERVECCERIA: Un super tanque, por favor!

This huge brewpub is way out in the suburbs, halfway to La Plata – in Quilmes, to be exact. The brewpub lies with the grounds of a large park and serves up Quilmes in crystal – pilsener – and bock – dark beer – forms. Quilmes is the largest Argentine brewer and a tanque of crystal on a hot, humid day can be a welcome event. Music and food are also provided late into the night.

Favorite Dish: Una crystal, por favor.

This cafι holds court in front of the little plaza next to the Vuelta de Roca. From here you can sit and watch the endless streams of tourists as they make their way to the Caminto. Especially at the end of a long day, it is a nice place to sip at a beer or coffee, reflecting on everything and anything.

Favorite Dish: Un campari, por favore.
