There is a big problem with putting up any tips here because Bangkok changes so quickly the place may not be there still. When I was there in Nov 2002 there were a whole string of bars along Sukhumvit near my hotel. When I was back there in March/April 2003 most of Clinton Plaza was gone as were the bars on the opposite side of the road.. However the bars that I used most were still there. Billy's Cafe and Bush Gardens are very friendly places where it is possible to get a drink without being hassled too much by the girls. Just persevere because it will happen at first.. But once they realise you're not there for the sex tourism, you can have some very interesting chats, but do buy them an occasional drink as this is how they earn their living
Update on this tip - Billy's Cafe is no demolished leaving Bush Gardens as the best place to go. There is also a bar underneath Bush Gardens, but as this is a family site I won't discuss that one.

Nightlife Spot: Muzzik Cafe

Right in the middle of Patpong on Patpong 1 is the Muzzik Cafe. This is almost a normal pub with live music and dancing by customers on the small dance floor. It doesn't have have of the usual bar girls found in Patpong - but it does get a fair share of 'freelancers'. but in general it's an escape from the blatent sex in the area. It can get very crowded and there are tables outside where you can just watch the crowds while drinking your Singha.

Nightlife Spot: Bus Stop

Just a short walk up Soi 4 from the "delights" of Nana Plaza you will find on the left side of the road a bar called Bus Stop. The semi open bar area and garden is an escape from the blatent sex trade outside. Although it does have its share of bar girls, they are not very aggresive in their sales techniques and are quite happy just to chat (if bought a drink)

Nightlife Spot: Cheap Charlies

I'm not sure wether I want to add this tip as this place is one of my favourite drinking spots and it is very small and would be spoilt if it got too crowded.
Basically this is on a small Soi just off Sukhumvit Soi 11 and is just a counter and a few stools on a corner of the alley. It is very popular with expats and as the name suggests it is pretty cheap to buy drinks here. Satit (the owner) has decorated the bar with an amazing variety of bits and pieces and it can be tricky seeing thru them to get served!
This is not a place for lively nigtlife as you are basically out on the street and it closes earlier than most bars (also it is not open on Sundays). There are also no bar girls here.
