The Khlongs - Bangkok's Canals.: Down the Khlongs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take a trip in a longtail boat along the Klongs. Our trip covered some of the northern Khlongs so we did not see the floating market, but we did see the royal barge museum.
Here you get away from the hectic pace of the Bangkok raods and see another side of living here. The houses range from small huts on stilits where the residents use the khlong for bathing and washing, to large luxery canalside mansions
We set out from the Taksin bridge and paid 2000 baht for 4 of us in a boat. Got the impression that 2000 was the price you pay regardless of party size

The Khlongs - Bangkok's Canals.: Another Khlong
  • Tip Rating:
  • The khlongs we travelled along were very peaceful, we only saw about 4 or 5 other tourist boats during the whole trip. Even when you are going past the houses and people are down in the water it still seems a whole world away from the bustle on the street.
However I was somewhat concerned about the wave created by the boat as it seemed to hit the banks of the khlong and the houses over the water quite strongly

    Chinatown: Chinatown
  • Tip Rating:
  • On our way to Wat Traimit from the water taxi stop we went wandering through the narrow alleys and markets of Chinatown. To see a real taste of Bankok I would now recommend this experience to anybody. The alleys are packed with stalls and people, and you will see fewer tourists round here (at least not many fereng).
If you want to do any shopping for gold while in Bangkok then the shops here may be your best bet.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Grand Palace is one of the top attractions in Bangkok. Also in the same area is Wat Phra Kheo which includes the Temple of the Emerald Bhudda. There is a lot to see here so allow at least half a day for here and Wat Pho which is next door.
    See the travelogue for more.

Grand Palace / Wat Phra Kaew: Grand Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • As you can see here the main attractions in Bangkok can get very crowded, especially in the high season (November thru February).

    Wat Pho: Reclining Bhudda
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the temple of Wat Pho is an enormous reclining Bhudda. Here's a picture of his feet just to give an idea of the scale.

    Ayuthaya-Old City: Ayutthaya
  • Tip Rating:
  • Take a day trip out the old capital of Thailand at Aytthaya. Much of it is in ruins from a Burmese invasion, but what's left is a great visit. See the travelogue for more pictures.
