BE AWARE OF FALLING COCONUTS.

by allikat - last update: Oct 14, 2006

February 2006 saw my second trip to Fijis main island, Viti Levu. What a great trip. The first time I visited, in 2002, I saw very little of Fiji, having developed a close and meaningful relationship with a poolside sunlounger. This trip I made a point of seeing something of Fiji. And Fiji is a great place.
The Worlds Greatest Rugby 7's

Fijian people are hard working, proud of their islands and some of the most cheerful people I have ever encountered. Big smiles accompany the traditional greeting - Bula!! - and if you mention rugby (Fiji has the worlds top Rugby Sevens team) you will witness an already happy Fijian become an enthusiastically happy Fijian. Small children with call a cheerful Bula! at you in the street. People will throw their arms in the air and call Bula! after your passing bus. I suppose there are grumpy Fijians. I just didn't see any.

But why Be Aware of Falling Coconuts? Well, Fiji has a lot of cocunut palms. It has a lot of other things too, like sugar plantations, wandering cows, scary drivers, fabulous beaches, sunshine, smiley Fijians, frangipani blossoms and more, but coconut palms mean coconuts. Did you know that a coconut plam will have nuts on it at every stage of development? And when they fall, they fall without warning. Often from a very great height. I didn't get clumped by a falling coconut, but evidently the risk is sufficient to persuade an otherwise cheerful and laid back Fijian to put the above notice up.

Pros:"The Fijian people and their permanent good mood."
Cons:"Cows on the road"
In A Nutshell:"Bula!!"

Thanks for all the tips, trying to choose between Fiji and Raratonga for a extra chilling trip when we visit NZ next year. What do you think?
