Finchingfield is situated about 8 miles to the North West of my home town of Braintree. It sits between the villages of Wethersfield and Great Bardfield and lays claim to be one of the counties prettiest villages - if tourist numbers in the summer months are anything to go by, then that is probably not far from the truth. A large duck pond is fed by the River Pant that runs beneath an old brick bridge, and there is a sprawling village green edged with period cottages. The Norman church stands high on a hill above the village, as does the old windmill, and there is a pub and village tea room popular with motorcyclists - the parking area outside the Fox Inne is often home to a line of shiny bikes, with a few sports cars and sometimes the odd horse.
Most of the houses around the heart of the village are between three and four hundred years old, with some later additions. The windmill dates back to the 18th Century and stands on the site of an even earlier mill. The medieval guildhall hangs over the road at the mercy of passing trucks - you can see past wounds that have been patched up.
- Pros:A picture postcard of a village
- Cons:Can get ridiculously busy during summer weekends
- In a nutshell:Well worth a visit, especially if you can come on a week day

My uncle had a shop in Finchingfield in the 1950s, and I was fascinated by the church - and the duck pond. Great to see photos that bring back memories
