I love Dunedin, and I am not a city person. I love the feel of the place, the way people smile and nod 'hello'. I love the way you can drive into Dunedin in rush hour on a rainy day and only sit at traffic lights for one light change and I love the bus service that means you can reach Dunedin from the suburbs so easily. I love walking around the compact heart of the city and enjoying the beautiful architecture. I love the fact that a short drive takes you to hilly countryside and sweeping, empty beaches. I love the peninsular with it's albatrosses, penguins and seals. I have loved Scotland for years, so I find the Scottish influence and heritage here is very much to my taste! I am so pleased that I now live only a couple of hours away. |
| | Dunedin is the main city in the province of Otago in New Zealand's beautiful South Island. It is a busy university town with a student population of around 25,000 - this is the home of New Zealand's first university. The university buildings are worth visiting in their own right and the city has many other architectural highlights including the railway station and several ornate Gothic-style churches. It owes it's Scottish influence to the early settlers from the 1840's and in fact the name 'Dunedin' is the old Gaelic name for Edinburgh. Those first settlers had intended that Dunedin's street plan reflect that of Edinburgh, but in fact the landscape was too different. However many of the street names will be familiar to Edinburgh residents. |
