What's in a name?

The fashionable Melbourne suburb of St. Kilda is linked by its name to Scotlands most remote group of Hebridean islands. An abandoned archipelago that rarely features on British maps (it being so far removed from the mainland) the island group gave their name to a yacht, which in the 1840's was anchored off Port Phillip Bay, and in turn gave the name to this characterful seaside spot. Strangely enough, there isn't actually a saint that ever went by the name of Kilda.

A sweep of sandy beach, a long pier reaching out into the bay with yachts in their marina bobbing up and down, a pavement cafe culture, market stalls with striped canopies, trams rattling along past an historic and slightly garish amusement park - this is my memory of a lazy Sunday wandering St. Kilda alone amongst the crowds.

I enjoyed your page on St Kilda - my favourite part of Melbourne. Heard something on the radio today about some artist who has 'invented' a Saint Kilda: curious timing coincidence!

Gr8 tips beautiful! We stayed down here for the weekend when we watched our Sydney Swans win the AFL Grand Final last year. I also stayed here in Aug last year for a VT meet. Fantastic place!
