"So What's Around RONCEVERTE ?" a Ronceverte Travel Page by V_Minx

I can't say that Ronceverte was my my final destination, but when traveling between Indiana and Virginia I hit upon a stretch of WV where I needed a break. Signs on the highway mentioned a place called Organ Cave, so I followed those signs and discovered a large cave system that I had never heard about before.

When I first pulled off the road I came upon a rodeo site. Apparently this area hosts the Organ Cave Rodeo Association and Diamond M Horse Shows during the summer months. Also, a nearby campsite offers a place for travelers to pitch a tent if they'd like to stay the night or longer.

Past the rodeo area is a building with supplies, restrooms and a place to pruchase tickets for a guided tour of Organ Cave. I was given a hardhat with light and as part of a small group (5 people) we went into the caves. Although not as "pretty" as many caves I've seen, there were some nice stallagtite & stillagmite structures. Most interesting was the history of the cave during the American Civil War days. One section even had "museum-like" figures positioned doing plausible work in the caves.

It was a nice break from a long days travel, but not enough to make me call this the final stop on the trail. It's worth a visit if you're in the area, but don't plan on spending more than a few hours here.
