Louisville - Full of Surprises

A Weekend Get-Away

City skyline from across the Ohio River
Since we couldn't find the time to enjoy Valentine's Day in February, my girlfriend and I decided to enjoy a B&B weekend in Louisville. I've lived relatively close by all my life, but for some reason I never managed to get here to explore before now.

A rough geography lesson. The north end of the city is the downtown area and it is bound by the Ohio River. Interstate 264 is the smallest circle freeway enclosing the town. Indianapolis is about 2 hours due north, Cincinnati is about 2 hours northeast and Lexington is less than 2 hours due east.

The city is divided into and east and west side with interstate 65 running through the center of town. A new 4th Street Live entertainment complex is still under construction downtown, but it is attempting to recapture the grandeur that 4th street once had. It used to be the main road of the city. About mid way into the city along 4th street is Central Park and the grand Victorian homes. Finally, along the southern edge of the city is the famous Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby is run on the 1st Saturday of May.

The new main drag of Louisville is Bardstown Road. It lies on the east side of I-65 and runs in a north-south direction (like 4th street). Many bars, restaurants, sidewalk cafes and shops line the street from the southern edge of the city to almost downtown.

If you are unfamiliar with the area, the city has done a nice job of placing roadway, historic landmark and locations of interest signs so you can navigate more easily. From what I saw, having your own automobile is you best bet for traveling around. I did see some taxis, buses and trolleys, but they were not common outside of the downtown area.

A Great website for planning a trip

200 years of history in your writing becomes so fascinating! Also, why you said you are at bad at photograhy? So modest like Chinese. LOL!
