The small town Königstein is located in the Elbsandsteingebirge called "Saxon Switzerland", about 20 km southeast of Dresden. It is situated right on the Elbe river on the entrance of Biela valley.
The small town enjoys a very central location inmidst of the beautiful recreation region. It is a good base for exploration.
In August 2002 it was badly hit by the flood of the Elbe river. Some of the houses in the centre had to be deconstructed, most are restored though.
The reason to visit Königstein is the fortress. It is located on one of the typical plateau hills, rising about 240 m above the valley floor.
You should calculate half a day for a visit, but in case you should include the hike (see sports tip) and try to see all the sights of the fortress you can easily extend your time there to a full day.
You better avoid the holidays and school holiday periods - it will definitely be crowded, since it is one of the top sights in Saxony (and Germany IMO).

Hi Ingo, I think this was one of your first pages on VT – still a very good one! I remember seeing those paddle steamers in Dresden.
Beautiful page and town. Great pics:)
